About

Landscapes of Belonging is an environmental data storytelling platform focused on how landscapes are shaped over time through data, narrative, and the systems that influence environmental change.

The platform integrates Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and data visualization to analyze land use, ecological patterns, and environmental processes across regions and scales. Each project combines spatial analysis with narrative to examine not only visible landscape change, but also less apparent factors such as data gaps, temporal shifts, and the structural systems that influence land management and environmental decision-making.

As an evolving body of work, Landscapes of Belonging develops data-driven stories that contribute to a broader understanding of environmental change. A central guiding question informs this work:

Are we addressing the causes of environmental change, or primarily responding to its consequences?

What This Work Pays Attention To

This platform focuses on environmental conditions and patterns that are often underrepresented in data or public discourse due to their complexity, scale, or distribution across systems.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Long-term environmental change and gradual landscape transformation

  • Gaps between quantitative data and lived, land-based experience

  • Incomplete, inconsistent, or inaccessible environmental datasets

  • The systems and frameworks that shape how environmental issues are measured, interpreted, and prioritized

Rather than centering a single topic, this work examines how environmental change is observed, analyzed, and communicated through spatial data and visualization, and how those processes influence understanding and decision-making.

This platform combines technical analysis and environmental storytelling to communicate complex spatial information in a clear and accessible way.

Using GIS mapping, remote sensing data, and visual analytics, each project translates data into structured narratives that support both interpretation and critical engagement. Visualizations function not only as outputs, but as tools for exploring relationships within data and across systems.

This approach emphasizes that environmental data is not neutral. It reflects the conditions, methodologies, and systems through which it is produced. By making these factors visible, the work supports a more informed and critical understanding of environmental information.

A Shared Relationship

Landscapes of Belonging is grounded in the principle that humans are part of interconnected ecological systems.

Landscapes are shaped through ongoing interactions between human activity, ecological processes, and environmental management practices. The way these systems are observed, measured, and interpreted influences both understanding and response.

Recognizing this interconnectedness highlights the importance of responsible land stewardship, informed decision-making, and approaches that support long-term ecological balance.

Looking Ahead

Landscapes of Belonging will continue to expand through the development of new data-driven projects focused on environmental analysis and storytelling.

The platform remains intentionally open-ended, supporting ongoing inquiry, multiple perspectives, and evolving methods for understanding environmental change through data.

Landscapes of Belonging is an invitation to see ourselves as part of the living world, where all beings belong, are interconnected, and share in its care.
